ISA’s 2015 Food & Pharmaceutical Division Symposium

The 2015 symposium, titled a “Pharmaceutical Automation Technology Update: Control, Optimization, Measurement, and Serialization,” will provide the very latest news, insights, trends and projections—direct from leading industry and solution experts—for pharmaceutical and food processing companies seeking to improve quality, safety, reliability, profitability, cost control and production throughput.

Two visionary and highly honored innovators—Paul McKenzie, Ph.D., (Vice President of Manufacturing and Technical Operations at Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) and Peter Martin, Ph.D., (Vice President of Business Value Solutions at Schneider Electric) will deliver keynote presentations at the event.

Dr. McKenzie’s presentation, titled “Using Data to Optimize Product Life Cycle,” will focus on how organizations are recalibrating their knowledge management strategies through better use of information technologies. The result, he says optimizes the product life cycle.

In his current position, Dr. McKenzie leads the Janssen Supply Chain (JSC) internal manufacturing and External Supply Integration (ESI) functions, leveraging resources to ensure a balanced emphasis on quality, service and cost control. Among the companies he worked for before joining J&J are Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck.

Dr. Martin’s presentation, titled “Applying Control Theory to the Real-Time Value Chain,” will center on the need to more effectively apply automation strategies and solutions in order to achieve optimum results. Accomplishing this, he says, requires a better understanding of: the potential value from automation solutions; the barriers to attaining and demonstrating this value; and the traditional business processes that require adjustment.

Dr. Martin is a world-renowned expert in the field of automation, having held executive and technical positions in engineering, product and strategic planning, marketing, and training throughout his career. He is a recipient of the ISA Life Achievement Award, and has been named as one of the 50 most influential innovators of all time in instrumentation and controls.

Two highly valuable ISA training courses will be taught on site
ISA will be conducting two essential ISA training courses in conjunction with the conference:
Introduction to Applying the Batch Control Standard ANSI/ISA-88.01 (IC40C)
This is an indispensable course for all automation professionals working in batch process, especially in the pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, food processing, chemical processing, and air and gas industries. Expert instruction will be provided on the ANSI/ISA-88.01 standard, including key challenges and issues it addresses, how to apply it, and where it can be best utilized. In addition, the elements of recipe procedural control, and the elements and structure of equipment control will be thoroughly covered.

Implementing Enterprise/Control Integration Using ANSI/ISA-95 Standards (IC55C)
This course is designed to help automation professionals integrate manufacturing systems into the corporate supply chain through the use of ANSI/ISA-95 standards. The course defines the activities associated with manufacturing control business logistics systems and describes in detail the information that must be shared between enterprise and control systems. Specifically, students will learn the requirements for an enterprise/control integration solution, and will be able to recognize the key issues and business drivers that determine a successful integration.

 

About the ISA Food and Pharmaceutical Industries Division (FPID)

The Food and Pharmaceutical Industries Division (also known as FPID) is organized within the Industry and Sciences Department of the International Society of Automation (ISA). FPID expands awareness and understanding about the latest technologies in automation, sensors, instruments, other equipment, computer systems and software application for the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) and Pharmaceutical Supply Chains (PSC).

The FPID retains a knowledge base of design, engineering, system, software, process automation, validation, quality, research, and scientific professionals. Division members: share and enhance their personal expertise in CPG product manufacturing and packaging, pharmaceutical R&D, clinical trials, and the manufacturing of tablet formulations, parenteral and biotech products; help  provide global leadership at the US Food and Drug Administration and other international regulatory bodies; and furnish valuable knowledge and input on controversial issues regarding instrumentation, analysis automation, equipment and system validation, and testing for regulatory compliance.
